Thank you to those of you who supported the bond issue last Tuesday!! The bond issue passed and our district will receive $31.6 million from the state to renovate and rebuild our district's schools. We had a float in Monday's Halloween parade and waited anxiously Tuesday evening for the results. On Wednesday, a kindergarten student, Bret, came to school with a simple but very clear message: Thank You, Voters!

Rodeo Day, Harvest Parties and Halloween Parade

Yes, readers, it has been some time. PTO members have been busy helping out with Rodeo Day, which was held on Friday, October 19, the Harvest Parties, which were held on Friday, October 26 and the Cridersville Halloween Parade which was on Monday, October 29. Whew! Here are some photos from each event as well as a video or two. I will have to see what I've got and go from there.

For the parade, the PTO and staff of Cridersville entered two floats. The first was themed Reach for the Stars, which is our school theme this year. The other float was for B.E.S.T., Building Excellent Schools Today. This year we had about 33 students, 20 parents and 16 staff, as well as members of Singsation and district administration walk in the parade. The PTO would like to thank everyone who joined us in the parade, donated candy or time for the floats. The PTO would also like to thank the parents who donated their trailers for us to use.

Book Drive

The PTO recently held a gently used book drive. In addition to the book drive, PTO purchased $100 of books to be donated to a school in need. The school that we chose was Sts. Peter and Paul in Ottawa. Their school was severely damaged in the recent flooding. They are currently attending school with the students of Ottawa Elementary. Mrs. Green and Mrs. Laise went to Ottawa Elementary to deliver the books that were collected for the students in need. Thank you to everyone who donated books for the students in Ottawa.

Fire Station

Miss Rinehart tries on fire gear!

The KG, first and second grades visited the Cridersville Fire Station on Monday. Students learned about fire safety as well as what firemen look like when they have all of their gear on. Students know not to hide from fireman if they are in a fire. Safety precautions that can be taken at home were also discussed. The students were lucky enough to experience what it feels like to hold a fire hose with the help of one of the firemen.

Cridersville Elementary is a School of Promise

194 Schools of Promise Recognized

Columbus – From Appalachia to the inner cities, the number of Ohio schools with more than 40 percent poverty that met or exceeded state standards in reading or mathematics for all groups of children went from 117 in 2006 to 194 in 2007. Susan Tave Zelman, superintendent of public instruction, today sent letters of recognition to each of the school’s principals, who also will receive a banner later this month. “At a time when schools are being held more accountable for all groups of children, both statewide and at the federal level, these Schools of Promise are solid evidence that students from low-income communities can beat the odds. They provide hope and promise to students and teachers in all Ohio schools,” said Zelman.

Cridersville Elementary has been recognized two times in three years as a School of Promise.

The PTO would like to applaud the teachers and staff for their dedication and hard work in preparing our students not only for these state tests, but for life beyond their years in Cridersville Elementary School. Thank You!

After reading some of the posted comments and listening to fellow community members, I encourage all of you to visit this site: www.bestwapakschools.com. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, please visit this site and read about the issue. The money from the state is not recycled tax money, but rather money from the tobacco settlement. This is money we will NOT have to pay back. All three of our elementary schools went through a 24 item Ohio School Facilities Commission Assessment Evaluation. All three of our elementary schools failed. If the cost to renovate a building is more than two-thirds, or 67%, of what it would cost to build new, the state calls for the district to build new. In order to have the state as a partner and receive state funds, the district has to follow the state guidelines.

Cridersville School was built in 1939, with additions in 1954 and 1958. Cenntennial was built in 1948 and received changes in 1962 and 1990. Northridge was built in 1967. Even since the newest building, Northridge, was constructed, so much has changed as to what is needed to shape future education facilities. These needs include security, learning spaces, technology, community accessibility, sustainability, functionality, adaptive usability, flexibility, indoor environmental quality and school size.

So much has been happening at Cridersville School!

This week, the PTO kicked off our annual Fall Fundraiser with

an assembly on Tuesday. Seirs and Kyleigh were dressed up in

some of the great prizes you can win.

Mrs. Laise got into the giggle ball, another great prize.

Our Book Fair kicked off at Open House which was held on Tuesday evening.

We want to thank all of you who came out to visit our school!

The PTO hosted the first skating party of the year on Monday. We had an incredible turnout of about 50 kids! Many parents also came to Edgewood to brave the skating rink. The next skating party will be on Monday, October 8th.

we made it!

Whew! We made it through the first week of school. The kindergartners are really starting their first full week today, but nonetheless, we have made it.

As the temperatures remain warm, the students seem to be in great spirits. Even though some students complain about having to leave their summer vacation behind, everyone is happy to be back with their friends. Classmates have changed, your teacher is different but the spirit of Cridersville School is in full swing.

Why PTOs Are Important

Joining the PTO is a great way to learn about your child's school and to meet other parents. But being an active member does so much more. Decades of studies have shown that children whose parents are involved in their education have higher grades and are more likely to graduate than those whose parents aren't involved. They have better attendance, are more motivated, have higher self-esteem and are less likely to use drugs and alcohol or engage in violent behavior. When it comes to academic achievement, parent involvement is more critical than income, education level or cultural background.

There's a payoff for parents and schools, too. Involved parents tend to feel self-confident and in control. They meet new people, which strengthens and expands their social networks. They become better educated about child development and they tend to have positive rapport with the school. Teacher morale increases and schools become stronger.

Being involved with your child's education doesn't begin and end in the school, of course. Parents need to show interest in their children's learning, read to them and help with homework. But there's something about going into the classroom to help the teacher, or making posters for Science Night, or volunteering to help at the Santa Store, Book Fairs or Carnival that tightens the relationship between home and school for everyone--parents, children and teachers. When enough parents join the PTO and put their collective creativity, talents, skills and resources toward the same objective, they're capable of just about anything. Starting with nothing, PTOs can create carnivals and family nights, conjure programs and performances and buy equipment and supplies that make teaching easier or more interesting and school more fun. PTOs help kids pay for field trips and throw their organizing power behind campaigns to support our districts' schools. Being involved in your child's PTO can be an experience of a lifetime.
